Portable console released in 2004

This dual-screen console opened up new, innovative ways to play games; mainly with touch-based control, but also in other ways, such as interacting with its microphone. A later model, the DSi, would introduce a camera and an online download service to the console.

Nintendo DS

The Nintendo DS notably had two screens, with the bottom screen serving as a touch screen to increase the interactivity of its games, which was highly innovative in a pre-smartphone era, where touchscreens were mostly limited to unresponsive, basic-use PDA devices. The DS also featured a microphone capable of basic voice recognition, which lent its use to plenty of more casual videogames and general purpose applications; a market that Nintendo was beginning to aggressively pursue at the time. The clamshell design of the DS was directly inspired by the Game & Watch Multi-Screen consoles, due to a stern request by Hiroshi Yamuchi (then president of Nintendo) that the new console had two screens. The DS is backwards compatible with the GBA, and has the same buttons as the GBA, but now has an X and Y button for more complex DS games. The DS name means "dual screens" and was originally intended to be a placeholder name before it stuck.

AC Adapter

The AC adapter for the Nintendo DS was sold with the console, and also sold separately. Early adapters had a defect that could cause serious damage to the console, which Nintendo replaced for free starting from 2006. The NTR-002 adapter appears to be fairly similar to the AGS-002 adapter, which several people also used to charge their Nintendo DS, as the Nintendo DS has the same charging port as the GBA SP.

NTR-003

Nintendo DS Battery

The built-in battery pack for the Nintendo DS. In addition to being included with the console, you can also purchase this battery from the Nintendo homepage in certain regions.

NTR-004

Nintendo DS Stylus

The Nintendo DS stylus is 75mm long and can be stored in the main body when not in use. The stylus comes included with the console, but can be bought separately in case the owner loses it.

Nintendo DS Cartridge

Nintendo DS cartridges are small gray cartridges, with DSi-exclusive cartridges being coloured white instead. Nintendo DS cartridges are region free and can be used on any Nintendo DS or 3DS console, regardless of where the cartridge was bought.

NTR-005(-01)

It's unknown what this model of Nintendo DS Cartridge is. If anyone knows any details, please let me know.

NTR-005(-02)

This model of DS Cartridge is used for games that are "DSi enhanced", meaning they have extra features when used with a Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL. For example, "Art Academy" can be played on all models of DS, but if played with a DSi or DSi XL, a Camera option appears on the main menu, allowing you to use the DSi Camera to take reference pictures for future art projects. These cartridges are also region locked when used with a DSi or DSi XL. They can still be used with any region of Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite but can only be used with a DSi or DSi XL of the same region. Certain games, such as "Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem" have seemingly no additional features, leading some people to speculate that these games were released on "DSi enhanced" cartridges just to utilise the region lock.

NTR-005(-03)

This model of DS Cartridge is used for physical Nintendo DSi games, used for games that require mandatory use of the DSi Camera. These cartridges have a special white colour and can only be played using a Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL. These DSi-exclusive cartridges are region-locked and will not play on a console that doesn't match its region.

NTR-005(-04)

This model of DS cartridge has Bluetooth capabilities, which is only used by "Learning with Pokemon: Typing Adventure" so that the game can use a small Bluetooth keyboard as a controller. While this cartridge is coloured the usual dark gray colour in Japan, the cartridge has unique light gray colour in the West.

NTR-006

Nintendo DS Cartridge Case

The cases that the game cartridges come in. There's an additional slot for GBA cartridges, used for games that make use of "option paks" (GBA carts that add new features to the Nintendo DS console). This can be seen with the Nintendo DS Browser, which comes bundled with a memory expansion pak.

NTR-006(-02)
The DS Cartridge Case 18 was a Club Nintendo prize and is basically a standard DS cartridge case, except it has 18 slots to hold DS cartridges, for easy transport of multiple games.

NTR-008

Nintendo DS Rumble Pak

The Nintendo DS Rumble Pak allows the Nintendo DS console to rumble and vibrate by inserting the rumble pak into the GBA slot. The Rumble Pak was bundled with "Metroid Prime Pinball" in Japan and America, and was bundled with "Actionloop" in Europe, due to "Metroid Prime Pinball"'s much later release Europe. The Rumble Pak was compatible with other games, such as "Clubhouse Games" and "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time", though the Rumble Pak was never sold separately.

NTR-009

Touch Strap

The Touch Strap comes included with the Nintendo DS console. The Touch Strap has a rounded plastic part that can be strapped to the user's thumb, as a replacement for the stylus, officially called the "thumb stylus". "Super Mario 64 DS" and "Metroid Prime Hunters" recommended this control method for movement, but the method appeared to be quite unpopular and wasn't really suggested after the Nintendo DS' initial release.

NTR-009(-01)

This version of the Touch Strap was sold with the Nintendo DS Lite only in Japan, and is coloured entirely white with a gray Nintendo logo, to match the default colour of the Nintendo DS Lite and its general branding. Unlike the original Touch Strap, this strap lacks "thumb stylus", likely due to its unpopularity.

NTR-010

Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector

The Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector is a device for connecting the Nintendo DS to a Wi-Fi connection without an existing Wi-Fi router, during a time when Wi-Fi routers weren't very common in most households. Even if your household did have a Wi-Fi router, the DS wouldn't connect unless it used WEP security or no security at all. The USB Connector is plugged into a computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista, that itself is connected to broadband via a wired connection. The USB Connector could be bought from certain tech retailers and Nintendo's own website.

NTR-011

Nintendo DS Memory Expansion Cartridge

The Nintendo DS Memory Expansion Cartridge is an option pak used to increase the limited 4MB RAM of the Nintendo DS by an additional 8MB. It was bundled and used exclusively by the Nintendo DS Browser; it's not even possible to use the Nintendo DS Browser without having the Memory Expansion Pak inserted. The contents of the Memory Expansion Pak is wiped when the Nintendo DS console is powered off, meaning it's not possible to save the cache, cookies or any temporary data.

NTR-012

Slide Controller

The Slide Controller was bundled with, and used exclusively by the Japan-exclusive game "Slide Adventure MAGKID". The Slide Controller is inserted into the GBA port and is used similarly to a computer mouse; the controller is moved around a surface to interact with the videogame. The Slide Controller also has rumble, but is not compatible with videogames compatible with the standard Rumble Pak.

NTR-014

Face Training Scan Cartridge

The Face Training Scan Cartridge was bundled with, and used exclusively by the Japanese version of "Face Training". The Japanese version of this game was a standard DS game, rather than a DSi-exclusive game, meaning the Scan Cartridge was required in place of the DSi's built-in camera. The Scan Cartridge is inserted into the GBA slot, where the camera naturally sticks out if used with a DS Lite. If inserted into a standard DS model, a button on the cartridge makes the camera pop out, so it doesn't get obscured by the console's deeper GBA port.

NTR-015

Nintendo DS Cleaner

The Nintendo DS Cleaner is a tool for cleaning DS cartridges and the DS cartridge slot. It's shaped like an elongated DS cartridge, with small brushes to clean dirt off the metal pins of the DS cartridge, and fabric in place of metal pins, to clean the actual DS cartridge slot.

NTR-016

One-Seg DS TV Reception Adapter

The One-Seg DS TV Reception Adapter is a DS cartridge that allows the player to tune into television broadcasts via software simply called "DS TV". The DS TV Reception Adapter was available from November 2007 onwards, and also comes with a DS TV cover and DS TV external antenna.

NTR-017

DS TV Cover

The DS TV Cover is a small plastic cover that comes bundled with the DS TV reception adapter and external antenna. It's used to protect the metal pins of the reception adapter whilst it's not being used.

NTR-019

Nintendo DS Headset

The Nintendo DS headset is a single earphone and microphone designed for voice chat, in games such as "Pokemon Diamond and Pearl" and "Yakuman DS". The headset's microphone can be used in place of the standard microphone for games that require it, but this doesn't seem to work with every game. The microphone port has been removed from Nintendo 3DS models, meaning this peripheral can only be used exclusively with Nintendo DS models. There's only one earphone, so the audio output is monaural.

NTR-020

Nintendo DS Cleaner Case

The Nintendo DS Cleaner Case is a case for storing the Nintendo DS Cleaner and GBA Cleaner (AGB-023), and comes packaged with both accessories in the "Nintendo DS Cleaning Set".

Magnet Stand

The Nintendo 3DS Magnet Stand is a stand for Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite. Since it uses GBA cartridge port, the console can be firmly connected to the magnet stand, and since it has a magnet, you can stick the console onto a refrigerator. This makes the peripheral perfectly suited for cooking games such as "Cooking Guide".

NTR-023

Bimoji Brush Stylus

The Bimoji Brush Stylus is a stylus that imitates a writing brush, included with the Japanese-exclusive title "DS Bimoji Training". This specialised stylus makes it much more natural to write kana on the Nintendo DS touch screen.

NTR-024

Stylus with Strap

This stylus is attached to the Nintendo DS Magnetic Stand. Since the stylus is always attached to the Magnet Stand, this makes the console much easier to interact with whilst it's being suspended by the Magnet Stand.

NTR-025

DS TV External Antenna

The DS TV External Antenna is used to improve the reception when it is difficult to receive 1Seg radio waves indoors using the standard DS TV antenna. It comes with suction cups, so it can be attached to a window where radio waves can easily be reached. It is included with the rest of the DS TV set.

NTR-027

Walking Meter

The Walking Meter is a pedometer that was bundled exclusively with "Personal Trainer: Walking/Walk with Me" and "Active Health with Carol Vorderman". By infrared communication, data is sent and received to and from the DS via the DS card with infrared transmission. The device can store step count data and, once sent to the DS console, can display your step count for each minute, each hour, each week, or even your total step count data for the whole month.

Stand (Base)

The base of a stand packaged with "Otona no DS Kao Training" to enhance your face muscles. In addition to supporting the Nintendo DS console, it can also be used to place the stylus.

NTR-029

Stand (Panel)

Another part of the stand packaged with "Otona no DS Kao Training" to enhance your face muscles. This panel is the part of the stand that the DS console actually leans on.

NTR-030

Nintendo DS Motion Sensor Cartridge

The Nintendo DS Motion Sensor Cartridge is a specially shaped DS cart used for "Starry Navi", available only in Japan. It's about 1.5 times the length of a normal DS card, and sticks out of the console. It has a gyrometer and accelerometer, allowing the cartridge to detect which direction it's been pointed in, and how fast it's being moved around. With the game "Starry Navi", this information allows the game to detect which stars you might be viewing during the night-time, and will educate you on constellations.

NTR-031

Nintendo DS Infrared Cartridge

The Nintendo DS Infrared Cartridge is a standard DS cartridge with an infrared port, used for by "Walk with Me/Personal Trainer: Walking" and "Active Health with Carol Vorderman" to communicate with the Walking Meter, "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" to communicate with the PokeWalker and "Pokemon Black 2/White 2" to communicate with other cartridges. The infrared cartridge uses a translucent plastic that allows infrared rays to pass through, so the infrared cartridge is a mostly black colour, unlike the standard DS cart's grey colouration.

NTR-032

PokeWalker

The PokeWalker is a pedometer bundled with "Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver". The exterior is designed to resemble a Poke-Ball, and there's a clip on the back so it's easy to attach to clothing. The PokeWalker communicates via infrared to transfer Pokemon data from the host game, allowing players to take their Pokemon on virtual walks, granting them access to rare items and even rarer Pokemon.
