Portable console released in 2004

This dual-screen console opened up new, innovative ways to play games; mainly with touch-based control, but also in other ways, such as interacting with its microphone. A later model, the DSi, would introduce a camera and an online download service to the console.

Nintendo Zone Box

The Nintendo Zone Box is a device used in game stores and retailers to automate the connection between a player's Nintendo DS or 3DS console and a local WiFi network, which enables the console to receive exclusive content from Nintendo's Nintendo Zone server. This exclusive content ranged from game demos for upcoming games, to special StreetPass guests for Nintendo 3DS users, and even specially distributed Pokemon on a couple occasions. In reality, the Nintendo Zone Box is a modified Nintendo DSi console, lacking a top screen, camera and battery. Removing the DS Download Service cartridge reveals a standard DSi menu, and disassembling the device reveals a slightly modified DSi motherboard, which still has connections for a top screen and camera to be connected. Without a battery, the device only turns on when connected to a WAP-002 charger, and will turn off once the charger is removed. This Nintendo Zone Box appears to be a newer variant of the NIS-004, as it uses modified DSi hardware rather than modified DS Lite hardware.
