Custom Robo


Action series started in 1999


A series of action games where players create custom robots that battle each other in 3D arenas. These custom robots are named "Custom Robo" and are roughly 30cm in-universe. The story revolves around thwarting an evil organisation and becoming the Custom Robo champion.

In this game, you assume the role of a young boy who owns and commands a "Custom Robo", a small 30cm robot that can fight other robots in playground battles, with many compatible customisable parts that allow you to fight using a variety of different styles. The game also supports local multiplayer.

A sequel packed with content, the game's story mode has now been split into two halves: the "A New Journey" portion, which introduces the story characters and the player to the battling and the world of Custom Robo, and "The Grand Battle" portion, which features your character concluding their journey by participating in a tournament. More robots and parts have been added, and a new 2-on-2 battle system is now available, which can be played by 4 people via local multiplayer.

This Game Boy Advance version of Custom Robo focuses on aerial combat in large two-dimensional arenas, with weapons that can penetrate or shoot around obstacles allowing for multi-layered offensive and defensive playstyles.

Compared to the previous three games, the Custom Robo in this game are depicted more realistically in terms of details, colours and humanoid proportions. The story characters and maps are now displayed in full 3D and battles can now be fought in a 4-player battle royale style. The Japanese version of this game has a different opening cinematic, which is more reminiscent of an anime opening. This cinematic even has its own licensed song: "identity -prologue-" by J-pop group "Dream".
