A series created by media artist Toshio Iwai, Electroplankton is a game where players can interact with different kinds of sea plankton via the touch screen and microphone to create their own musical performances.

Named after "Heliozoa", a real species of plankton, the "Sun-Animalcule" behave based on how Toshio Iwai initially interpreted their name. They are creatures that look like the Sun, hatch from eggs and continuously shine and grow until death.

In Japan, this species is called "Marine Snow",  which is a real phenomenon where a large cluster of dead plankton and detritus appear under water and resemble snowfall.
